Inserting WordArt into Shared Borders

If you use Shared Borders and go to insert WordArt, or another Vector Markup Language (VML) item, you may find that the WordArt commanded is greyed out (unavailable), or nothing appears when you do insert the image. This is because of the way the browser renders shared borders, and the way in which VML requires a page to be written, this cannot be done using FrontPage in the conventional manner.

To get around this, you will have to manually insert the WordArt into the border page that FrontPage creates. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure hidden files and folders are available:

  2. On the Tools menu, point to Web Settings, then click the Advanced Tab.

  3. Select the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" check box, then click OK.

  4. You will be prompted by FrontPage to refresh the web - click OK.

Show Hidden Files and Folders check box

  1. You will now see a folder called  _borders folder, open the page called Top.htm.

  2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then on click WordArt.

  3. Select the style that you require and type in the text you want.

  4. Save Top.htm and then open any page that has a shared border.

  5. NOTE: you will not be able to see the WordArt image in the shared border.

  6. Now, with the insertion point in the body of the page, on the Insert Menu - point to Picture, then click WordArt.

  7. Select the style, and then press SPACEBAR once for the text - do not add the text yourself.

  8. Save the page.

  9. On the File menu, click Preview in Browser, and then view the page in IE5 or later. You will now see your WordArt in the shared border.
