Back up your web
Publish or Copy  Web to CD

General
First you need to prepare a CD-R (CD Writer) or a CD-RW (CD Re-Writer) for Direct File Copying. Insert your disc into your CD recorder, then following your recording program documentation, format the CD so that you can read and write to the CD using a drive letter. Using a CD-RW is preferable as you can then publish any changes back to CD without problems, also if you copy your web to CD, instead of publishing, you will not be able to troubleshoot the CD-R like you can a CD-RW

If you are using Windows XP - you can save information to a disc without using other software. But .... because Windows XP does not support packet writing, which is required to write and delete individual files on a recordable CD, you will need the third-party software.

Publish your Web to a CD

  1. Open your live or hard-drive Web with FrontPage.
  2. Click on File/Publish Web.
  3. In the Publish Destination box browse to the drive containing your CD.
  4. Click Options which is in the lower left-hand corner of the dialog box and under the Publish tab specify that you want to publish all pages.
  5. If you have subwebs and want them published as well, remember to tick the box.
  6. Click on Publish.

Copy a web to CD or from CD to Hard Drive

You can copy your web to CD or from CD back to web instead of publishing it (though publishing is preferable), but you may find that when you copy you cannot then open your web, or save changes to your web. This is because when you copied (instead of published) your web, it took on "Read Only" attributes. Also if you wish to update the CD, you may get the same problem. These Read Only attributes will have to be removed as follows:

To remove Read Only attributes from a CD-RW

(if you used a CD-R instead of a CD-RW, then you will not be able to remove the Read Only attributes on the CD - this is because CD-R discs do not allow this. But it can be done on a CD-RW)

  1. Insert the CD that contains your Web into your CD recorder.
  2. Right-click the Start button, and then click Explore.
  3. Use a drag-and-drop operation to copy the Web from your CD to a folder on your hard disk.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  5. On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click to clear the Hide file extension for known file types check box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In the Folders list, double-click the folder on the hard drive that contains your Web.
  8. Double-click the _vti_pvt folder.
  9. Delete any files that end with .lck.
  10. Repeat these steps for any subwebs.

To remove the Read Only attributes from a web copied to your Hard Drive:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to your web on the Hard Drive
  2. Now follow the steps from number 4 onwards for removing Read Only from disc, as shown above.
